MULTIDISCIPLINARY REVIEW
The surgeon, endocrinologist, dietitian and psychologist read the same file together, and the eligibility decision follows from that joint review.
2 OUR PRINCIPLES
Eligibility is decided not by one clinician but by four specialties reviewing the file together
Body mass index, glucose regulation and accompanying conditions are read against defined ranges
First-year reviews are defined; the intervals lengthen afterwards but follow-up does not stop
1 DEPARTMENTS
We carry out 13 different procedures at our clinic.

Laparoscopic procedures that alter stomach volume or the digestive route. The method is chosen together, once eligibility criteria and accompanying conditions have been assessed.
EXPLORE THE DEPARTMENT
Procedures aimed at blood glucose, insulin resistance and lipid balance. The decision follows an assessment carried out jointly with endocrinology.

Endoscopic procedures that need no incision, together with nutrition, psychology and laboratory follow-up. This work continues for patients for whom surgery is not planned or not yet appropriate.
SUMMARY
| BODY MASS INDEX | 40 and above | Considered between 35 and 39.9 where an accompanying condition is present |
|---|---|---|
| AGE RANGE | 18 - 65 | Outside this range the decision is made through a separate board review |
| ACCOMPANYING CONDITION | Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension, joint load | Its presence strengthens the case but is not sufficient on its own |
| PRECONDITION | Lifestyle change already attempted | Active substance dependence or an untreated eating disorder defers the assessment |
These ranges are a general framework. The final decision follows examination, testing and multidisciplinary review.
THE PROCESS
In obesity and metabolic surgery the question we hear most is not what a procedure is called but what order things happen in: what comes first, where the decision is made, and how long the follow-up lasts. These six steps run in the same order for every patient; what changes is how long each one takes. The eligibility decision is made at the third step, and where surgery is not found appropriate, a plan still follows.
ABOUT US
Your history is taken, measurements are made, and the tests you will need are set out in writing.
Blood tests, endoscopy, any necessary imaging and, where sleep apnoea is suspected, a sleep study are arranged.
The surgeon, endocrinologist, dietitian and psychologist review the results together; the eligibility decision is made here.
The nutrition plan is followed, breathing exercises begin and, where applicable, the process of stopping smoking is supported.
The chosen procedure, the expected length of stay and the discharge criteria are shared in advance.
Reviews take place at one, three and six months and at one year; laboratory values are measured and the plan adjusted.
The duration and criteria of each step are set out in writing before that step begins.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The questions we are asked most often about eligibility, preparation, hospital stay and follow-up
ALL QUESTIONS
At the initial consultation your height, weight and waist circumference are measured and your history taken. Tests are then requested and the results are reviewed together by a team made up of the surgeon, an endocrinologist, a dietitian and a psychologist. The eligibility decision follows from that joint assessment.
No. BMI is the starting point; it is read alongside muscle mass, fat distribution, blood glucose regulation, sleep apnoea and joint load. Two people with the same BMI can reach different decisions.
Usually between two and six weeks. During that time the tests are completed, stopping smoking and breathing exercises begin where relevant, and the nutrition plan is followed. The period can be longer where other conditions are present.
It depends on the procedure: same day or one night for endoscopic work, and between two and five days for surgery. Discharge follows once defined criteria are met.
Reviews take place at defined intervals through the first year; vitamin and mineral levels are measured and the nutrition plan is adjusted. In later years the intervals lengthen, but follow-up does not come to an end.
PATIENT REVIEWS
At the first consultation they told me directly whether I was eligible and gave me the list of required tests in writing. Nothing was rushed.
I heard the surgeon, the endocrinologist and the dietitian separately. Knowing the decision did not rest on one person put me at ease.
The length of my hospital stay, the discharge criteria and what I needed to do in the first month were all explained in advance. Nothing differed from what I had been told.
